Tutorial Workshop
POSITIVE + NEGATIVE SPACE
Objective: Create imagery that uses pictorial space to enhance the intention of the message
For this artwork, I have chosen to create negative space by coloring the LHS of the artwork black stripes first just to see how it looks. Overall, I created more negative spaces on the face, the sitting man's body and the "screen" he is looking at (the top of the head). I have also created positive space by cutting out the door, alternate steps on the stairs, the nose, and the top of the platform. Lastly, i decided to fully make the "pillars" connecting the platform to the head fully a negative space. I think the final artwork emphasizes that the head has his eyes closed. It also allows the tiny man to become more alive as everything but his face is white.

"DISTURB" Assignment
Task: Construct a new image which should DISTURB the content, meaning and imagery present in your original images
For this exercise, I have chosen to use the photo of the city landscape as the first layer. I made two copies and placed them side by side. Next, I made copies of photo of the crowd of different sizes and layered them. Then i cut up the details of the palm trees and used it as sky details. I feel that when i put them in that position, the trees no longer look like trees. They actually kind of look like fireworks. I wanted to create more positive space so i cut out the night sky. I then added more negative spaces by using a black marker and coloured some parts of the buildings.
POSITIVE + NEGATIVE
I have decided to change the whole mood of the image by using positive space in the background. In addition i decided to use positive space on on the spots on the leopard's back as well. In conclusion, I feel that it makes the leopard look less intense and fierce as more light is brought to the image. I did not use positive space on the head of the leopard was because i wanted a contrast between the body and the head. I wanted to retain the intensity of the face of the leopard.
Firstly, I used negative space on the lips of the women. It makes them look like their mouth is closed instead of open as in the original image. I then wanted to emphasize particular features of the women (face of the women on the right) by blackening her neck and torso. I also wanted to see if certain facial features can be emphasized if i were to add negative space to a portion of the left woman's face. I feel that this highlights her nose and lips and also gives her a different vibe. Overall, the added negative space gives the women a more mysterious and high fashion vibe.
